10 / 10.0 - Muse Dash
Jul 4, 2019

Muse Dash is simple, but the polished and addictive gameplay and visuals place it a notch above most rhythm games. A solid library of fun songs and precise beatmaps promises a fun experience, and at a price of only $2.99, it's basically a steal.

Everything that I love about Return of the Obra Dinn is present in The Case of the Golden Idol and more. Things are never as straightforward as they seem, and the story is so absorbing that I once again spent all night delving into each case. My only wish is that the game was longer, as I eventually completed it in four hours. But when the only flaw is that you wanted more, can it really be considered a flaw?

10 / 10.0 - Wayward Strand
Sep 27, 2022

Those looking for epic action, combat, or elaborate gameplay will not find what they are looking for in Wayward Strand. However, I encourage everyone who wants to experience a deep, heartwarming, beautifully written tapestry of stories to take some time, relax, and sit down with Wayward Strand for a few hours. You never know who you’ll meet or what you’ll learn this time around. Remember – everyone has a story to tell, and sometimes, all you have to do is listen.

The Nirvana Initiative improves on its predecessor in every way, bringing in twice as many interesting, layered characters that all get their time in the sun, crazy mysteries with twists i never saw coming, intelligent writing, vastly improved puzzles, impeccable voice acting and the best soundtrack of the year. I am shocked to say this, but I think the package as a whole outdoes Spike Chunsoft’s previous works.

10 / 10.0 - Splatoon 3
Sep 14, 2022

Splatoon 3 perfects the Splatoon formula with a generation-defining experience from Nintendo. The multiplayer is deeper and more intuitive than ever before, whilst the campaign soars above its predecessors for its creativity and challenge. Gloriously flashy in its presentation and audio, Splatoon 3 stays fresh from its tutorial to the credits roll, and far beyond.

10 / 10.0 - Bayonetta 3
Nov 9, 2022

With epic set pieces, fast frenetic action and tons and tons of options, Bayonetta 3 expertly builds on top of the very solid foundation laid down by the first two games in the series. I, for one, am willing to wait eight years if that how long it takes for another game as bombastically insane and awesome as this one.

"Pentiment" delivers a murder mystery, a period piece, and a deeply moving examination of the human heart over the course of years, all in a single game that doesn't require hundreds of hours to get through. Come for the point-and-click adventure, stay for the heartbreaking narratives interwoven into the tapestry of a small town.

10 / 10.0 - Hi-Fi Rush
Feb 1, 2023

You can’t see rhythm. No one can. But that doesn’t mean it isn’t there. Whether you can read music or not, whether you’ve mastered an instrument or can’t manage to play Hot Cross Buns, you are a rock star. You may not know it, you probably don’t believe it. But you’ll tightly navigate those progressions, finesse those pull-offs, and slice through those harmonies until you do believe it. Hi Fi Rush is going to make you believe you are a rock star.

Season is a game with a great many messages hidden throughout a simple yet impactful story. For me, it is a story about grief, memories, hope and connections. It’s a reminder to appreciate the little things this world has to offer, and how fragile they really are. It’s about the bonds we form with people – from strangers to family. It’s about how the future is uncertain and yet thrilling and exciting and out there waiting.

Despite the issues in online, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is the definitive game in the series. It’s a celebration of Nintendo’s legacy in the gaming industry, and a triumph in game design.

9.5 / 10.0 - Octopath Traveler

It’s a triumph in artistry. Along with its silky-smooth gameplay, you’ve got yourself a JRPG that you shouldn’t miss — heck, it’s a title that every Switch owner should have, even if they aren’t too interested. It’s just great to see that Square Enix is embracing that old-school JRPG flair and made a near-perfect game.

Now that my journey is over, though, there’s a part of me that misses that tedium. I want to go back and hunt all the animals, explore every mountaintop and winding river. There were so many little easter eggs that I’ve missed in Red Dead Redemption 2, and I want to take my time to find them all. Maybe it’s Stockholm syndrome. Or maybe Rockstar has built one of the most realistic depictions of life itself.

Overall, BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle is a very solid fighter. The game is simple enough for beginners to be able to jump in, yet has enough complexity for those who are more experienced with fighting games. The game does have its shortcomings, especially when it comes to the lack single-player options. Despite this, the game looks good, sounds good, and plays good.

Summerset is a very comprehensive chunk of DLC. The storyline is really satisfying and the new zone is by far Zenimax Online’s best work. All the other inclusions easily justify the price of this content. If Summerset is any indication as to the quality of future content, then the future is looking very bright for this MMO.

9 / 10.0 - The Messenger
Sep 10, 2018

The Messenger goes beyond paying its respects to the games of the past, effectively using the time shifting as a homage to the 8- and 16-bit eras. It’s more than a gimmick, acting as both a game mechanic and a storytelling tool. The interesting narrative draws you in while the clever writing breaks the fourth wall to make you laugh. The tight controls keep you playing, despite the slight tedium of the Metroidvania segments. The Messenger toes the line between being a tribute to old-school games and being a modern game with a fresh feeling.

The first episode of Life is Strange 2, which took me roughly three hours to complete, is an emotional experience that shouldn’t be missed this year. It’s a strong start to a series that exceeds all expectations. It lays a lot of promise for the next four episodes that I hope Dontnod delivers on, and I want the political commentary to continue. This sequel has a lot of ambition and lofty goals, but if it succeeds, it has the potential to be crowned one of the best titles in the episodic narrative genre.
