6.5 / 10.0 - Eternights
Sep 20, 2023

Eternights, an indie game inspired by Persona, blends RPG progression with hack 'n' slash action. While combat lacks depth, the game shines in character development and storytelling. Its teenage-oriented tone may not appeal to everyone, but it offers a unique mix of romance and supernatural intrigue.

A recommended appointment for those who have enjoyed the previous episodes of the series in the past, but it probably remains an all too simplistic and self-referential product for the simply curious players.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails into Reverie may not mark the beginning of a new narrative arc, but it serves as a celebratory culmination of a beloved RPG series. With its well-crafted characters and intricate political storytelling, it offers a final chance to revisit the rich Trails universe. While visual aspects may show their age, the engaging gameplay and memorable interactions make this a worthwhile experience for dedicated fans. For newcomers, starting with earlier entries in the series is recommended for a proper introduction.

Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective is a high-definition re-release of a cult game from the Nintendo DS era, which in this high-definition version has one more chance to be appreciated by fans of the mystery stories and puzzles typical of the works written and directed by Shu Takumi. This ambitious game is highly recommended for Ace Attorney fans and anyone who wants to get involved with the rich cast of eccentric characters that populate its dark mysteries.

Fuga: Memories of Steel 2 picks up the reins of the previous chapter without making any particular changes to its structure. Cyberconnect2's video game remains a fascinating and emotionally challenging work, recommended for anyone who wants to immerse themselves in a role-playing game with melodramatic and committed tones. It is a pity that such singular works go entirely unnoticed in the generalist market, especially when one thinks that with higher production values, they could establish themselves as true must-haves.

Monster Menu: The Scavenger's Cookbook may be a rich snack for fans of the genre, but it may prove indigestible to most at the launch price at which it is offered.

5.8 / 10.0 - Mato Anomalies
Mar 28, 2023

Mato Anomalies is a video game with an interesting premise, but with an execution that is barely capable of keeping up with other turn-based RPGs. Its noir atmospheres mixed with a cyberpunk setting are extremely seductive, but under the bonnet of an interesting vintage car there is an engine whose roar really fails to impress.

From here there is no going back: Atelier Ryza 3 takes Gust's RPG series into the future.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails to Azure is a well-written and content-rich RPG that pays the discount of a technical profile that is anything but up to date. An unmissable appointment for enthusiasts, but perhaps we should advise newbies to start from the previous chapter.

A musical love letter addressed to fans of the Final Fantasy series, and one of the best rhythm games around.

Octopath Traveler II is the worthy second chapter of a series that made the history of the genre to which it belongs. The influences deriving from the predecessor are more than obvious, but the filings made to the formula, the additions and the large amount of content make it one of the best JRPGs out there.

Dragon Ball: The Breakers is a crude and poor video game, but it is not lacking in inventiveness. What I'm wondering is if, unlike other similar multiplayers titles, it will have time to evolve and improve over time, or if Bandai Namco will put an end to its service before the game formula is refined and enriched as it needs.

Metacritic: JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: All-Star Battle R is a mediocre fighting game, but a more than recommendable experience for those who don't miss a chance to shout "Hora Hora!" at the top of their lungs.

Frail Hearts Versicorae Domlion is an interesting video game that explores the rotten city of Gris through a suggestive setting and an intriguing and well-characterized cast of characters. The story always works well, but the gameplay (a mix between RPG and Visual Novel) doesn't always. Maybe it's because of the limitations of RPG Maker, or maybe it's an excess of naivety; however, the game developed by Sezhes will certainly appeal to anyone looking for a dark story full of monstrosities.

6.5 / 10.0 - Soundfall
Jun 9, 2022

The idea behind Soundfall is intriguing, but the execution falls flat too quickly. The rhythm game hybridization works most of the time, and it's probably its best feature, but the RPG elements tossed in just to add some more depth to an intrinsical arcade genre might not suit everyone's tastes. At the end of the day, the low production values and the general repetitiveness of the experience are what really stand out, and that's just disappointing.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba - The Hinokami Chronicles brings on Switch the same flavor we savored at the end of 2021, bringing to the table the free updates released on the other platforms, and the promise of new playable characters coming in the future. The portable experience is surprisingly faithful to the home console one, but some extent of exclusive content or at least an updated story mode would have turned a simple "switch port" into a much more welcomed return.

Persona 4 Arena Ultimax brings to modern gaming platforms all the content and updates wisely crafted by Arc System Works for Atlus' best fighting game yet. Unfortunately no new relevant features are included with this porting but at least the game has been freed from the shackles of old gen consoles.

Narratively speaking, Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin would be a badly written JRPG, but luckily Square Enix and Koei Tecmo's latest game is more than anything a very engaging action game that is very faithful to its source. Not perfect by any means but still enjoyable, the Nioh "soulslike" formula applied to the epic of Final Fantasy gives flesh to an interesting action game with a suprisingly deep learning curve and accessibility options that welcome any kind of player to the party.

5.8 / 10.0 - Babylon's Fall
Mar 7, 2022

Babylon's Fall is the first console GaaS developed by Platinum Games and it shows. Technically anchored to the past and artistically uninspired, the action game developed by the creators of Bayonetta hides its best features behind an abysmal story mode that lets the gameplay breath only after more than 10 hours of mandatory tutorials. Post-game content is interesting and the gameplay loop might be engaging after a good amount of updates to fix the rough edges, but will players keep faith in the developers after being welcomed in that way?

Gust and Koei Tecmo return to the Mysterious universe of Atelier, featuring Sophie and Plachta in a new adventure. This additional chapter revisits the old trilogy's mechanics in a new light, fixing the past issues and introducing some new interesting ideas to an already working formula. Presentation is stronger than ever and the new cast, albeit the stereotypical writing, grants some well-paced and relaxing Atelier experience without compromises of sort. This is what the Mysterious trilogy should have been and Gust knows it for sure.
